BEIRA INTERIOR

The Beira Interior region is located in the heart of central Portugal and is the highest wine-growing region in the country. The production of famous wines in this rugged territory began in Roman times and contributed early on to rapid humanization. Beira Interior wines stand out from others due to the journey of aromas and flavors they offer, a result of the region’s unique conditions that allow for excellent wine ripening. This aromatic exuberance and the region’s particular conditions, which give the wines a singular character, drive Beira Interior to assert itself and occupy its place of excellence in wine production.

CLIMATE

Given its geographical location, it’s easy to see that we are dealing with a temperate climate of continental influence, with large annual and daily temperature ranges. The winters are very harsh with sub-zero temperatures, while the hot, dry days of the summer months contrast with the cool nights, which are one of the key elements for slower and more uniform ripening.

The combination of these climatic characteristics gives the wines of the region a distinctive character.

SOIL

The Beira region, located between the highlands of the Serra da Estrela, Marofa, and Malcata mountain ranges, is unique for presenting one of the most vigorous contrasts in Portuguese soil. Between the granitic soils of the mountains and the schist soils of the Douro river basin, there are many quartz veins. It is in these latter veins that the particularity of these soils lies, allowing them to receive better sunlight due to the reflection of sunlight, which favors ripening.

These soils offer excellent conditions for the development of native grape varieties, which are already perfectly adapted to their rugged characteristics. It is here that fresh, vibrant wines with complex and fruity aromas are born.
